When the body temperature goes below normal set point, the human beings experience chills. Chills, is also referred to as rigor & it can be defined as a condition where the person experiences shaking condition with high fever. This condition should not be mistaken for a disease, but it is just a medical condition that can be cured. The person experiencing chills will have a kind of tingling sensation. Now, the hair follicles are flexed, which results in goose bumps. The person also experiences a cold sensation and dimpled skin at the back of the neck.
It is proved that chills are caused as a result of rapid muscle contraction & relaxation. It is accepted that chills is the condition by which the body generates heat. As a result of increase in the body’s temperature, a person experiences fever accompanied by chills.

Reasons for chills
Chills can be caused due to various reasons. Some of the most prominent ones are exposing oneself to cold environment; infections caused by virus & bacteria, for example, cold, etc.
The person affected by chills experiences headache, acute bronchitis, dry throat, muscle spasms, cramps in hands, no sweating, pink or red tongue and dull or pale complexion.
Herbal Treatments
Various herbal remedies are available in the treatment of chills.


Cayenne herbal remedies have proved to be very effective as it improves the circulation of blood & removes toxins & also warms circulation of the blood. Cayenne has proven to improve digestion, it helps in decongestion of lungs & it is also observed that it completely halts external bleeding.


 Capsaicin is one such commercial product that has the benefit of blocking the response of pain. The remedy is highly useful in treating arthritis, sore muscles & shingles.


One of the popular herbs available in the world today is ginger. Usage of ginger improves digestion, relieves nausea & circulation of blood is stimulated. When consumed in the early stages of chill, ginger will help in the body sweating more, & the waste material in the body & the pathogens are thrown out. Ginger is used in the treatment of nausea & vomiting, swelling & pain in the chest & abdomen. Ginger is also considered as an effective medicine in treating arthritis, sprain, sore backs or elbows.

There is another very common garden herb, which is known as rosemary. It also stimulates the nervous & circulatory system. The natural antioxidant & natural anti-inflammatory properties of the herb has proved to be a good appetite stimulant. Rosemary is prescribed if the person experiences weak circulation after very heavy work or after a serious illness, be it flu or pneumonia.

Tea & Honey

Another effective treatment for chills is tea with proportionate amounts of peppermint & elder flowers. Add Tabasco or a small amount of grated ginger root, which helps in stimulation of blood circulation. Honey can also be used as an effective treatment. A decoction of Atractylodes rhizome, Siler root, blue poppy flowers is an effective cure for chills.
